Please check the time of the last ferry at the start of your trip – a clock on the wharf will indicate the last departure each day. You'll need at least half a day (4-5 hours) to visit Rangitoto Island. A regular daily ferry service from either downtown Auckland or Devonport Wharf makes getting to Rangitoto easy and convenient.
Again I am struck by the complete absence of any noticeable trappings of civilization—no roads, rooftops, power lines, towers; nothing that suggests we humans have been here at all. The low, wide mass of the volcanic island rises with uncanny symmetry from the choppy gray-green waters of Hauraki Gulf, its profile of olive-toned foliage unbroken by any hint of human presence. To my willing imagination it evokes archetypal cinematic jungle islands—hints of Moreau, King Kong, Jurassic Park—and I am eager to reach it and explore. 2 berth maui ultima was chatting to a friend by the wharf in Russell after dark when he saw the brown kiwi "fossicking around, poking his beak here and here" on the night of May 8.
Exploring Rangitoto is a ‘must do’ day out for locals and tourists alike. A gentle climb through lava fields will lead you to the summit in approximately one hour. Allow extra time to explore the lava caves on the way back, or see the historic bach community near the wharf. Yes, Rangitoto Island is great for children 5 years and over, as there are lava caves, native bush and beaches to explore.
Remember your torch if you would like to explore the caves fully, as it is quite dark. Take the 9.15 ferry from Auckland City or Devonport to be met at Rangitoto Wharf. Your guide will take you through the Kidney Fern Glen to the prison camp site before walking back along the coastal track past the remaining baches to our UNESCO award winning Museum bach for a welcome morning tea.
From time to time, adverse weather conditions require us to sail into Islington Bay Wharf instead of Rangitoto Wharf. This means there are some changes to your walking time on the island.
There are no rubbish bins on pest-free islands. Please remember to take all your rubbish, including leftover food, off the island with you.
